Oscars 2012: Natalie Portman goes for vintage Christian Dior

Posted on by M in Fashion News, Fashionfreude | Leave a comment

Natalie Portman’s vintage Dior gown was so expensive, she only borrowed it for the Oscars.

The $50,000 polka dot dress was a last-minute choice that was so ‘perfect’, it didn’t need an alterations.

But Ff  just isn’t that into it.

While she looks pretty, we can’t help but feel the polka-dot vibe doesn’t work for Nat, who’s such a  ‘serious’ actress.

The dress would have suited a more vivacious character like SJP for instance and the hair, jewels and make-up did nothing to bring it to life.

Oscars 2012: Jessica Chastain wears McQueen, is Twitter’s favourite

You can’t argue with Twitter. It’s the law. And the good users have decreed Jessica Chastain best-dressed of the night.

We agree, Jessica’s frock has all the drama of an Oscars dress and Sarah Burton’s workmanship is second-to-none. But is it just us or does the gown wear her just a little bit?

Either way, an unusually brave choice for the Tree of Life star, bravo for being adventurous!

Do you like Jess’s dress?

Oscars 2012: Emma Stone swaps Giambattista Valli for Chanel, looks beter

Emma Stone is never one to put a sartorial foot wrong but she left us with lukewarm feelings on Sunday night.

There was nothing bad about the Giambattista Vallie gown per se (even though it looks very Gucci and Nicole Kidman wore a similar dress to the Oscars in 2007), but Ff thinks the Chanel gown she slipped into for the Vanity Fair party suited her more.

Agree?

Oscars 2012: Rooney Mara goes trademark in Givenchy Couture

Although Rooney Mara looks fabulous in Givenchy Couture, doing what she does best, we would have liked to have seen the actress switch it up last night – if only because it was the Oscars.

But kudos to Rooney for not hitting the (St Tropez) bottle and keeping her alabaster skin – a true classic beauty.

Oscars 2012: Milla Jovovich is the ice queen of the night in Elie Saab

Milla Jovovich looked the epitome of sophistication and glamour in Elie Saab from his 2009 collection.

Even though it was white, the cap-sleeve, one-shoulder detailing stopped it from looking bridal.

The retro cut and red lipstick finished the dress of beautifully.

One of our faves.

Oscars 2012: Jennifer Lopez wears Zuhair Murad, leaves Ff on the fence

Jennifer Lopez always likes to make a statement.

At the Oscars, she wore Zuhair Murad and left little to the imagination with a plunging neckline and crystals galore.

Vintage Jlo, ok dress, shame about the hair.

Do you like it?

Oscars 2012: Screen siren Penelope Cruz dazzles in Giorgio Armani

Penelope Cruz went all Mad Men on us at the Oscars in a stunning Giorgio Armani gown and Chopard jewels.

The blue shade kept the dress looking fresh but we can’t help but think it was a slightly too-old look for Penny – and would have been better suited for the likes of Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep.

However, the beautiful face and retro hair made it work.

Oscars 2012: Angelina Jolie really wants you to know Versace gown is split to the thigh

Posted on by M in Fashion News, Fashionfreude | Leave a comment

Angelina Jolie opted for her signature look at the Oscars, black dress, stunning face.

But one thing was different with the actress last night – she went to painstaking lengths to show off her thigh through her Atelier Versace velvet gown – stretching it out at every opportunity and almost pulling a muscle in the process.

Usually aloof, it’s not like Ange to care so much about her appearance, making us wonder if something other than a leg spasm is going on ….you heard it here first.

Oscars 2012: Fashion forward Michelle Williams rocks peplum in Louis Vuitton

The award for most adventurous definitely goes to Michelle Williams, who not only wore red but opted for hot new trend peplum.

The My Week With Marilyn actress looked very pretty in the elegant gown and we love the bow-detail on the waist.

Bonus points for the hot pink clutch and lips but we wish Michelle had kept the neckline bare.

Do you agree?

Oscars 2012: And the award goes to…..Gwyneth Paltrow (for showing the world a Tom Ford gown)

Ff spends all year waiting with bated breath for the Oscars, so it’s only natural that we would a pang of disappointment once the moment has arrived (we are women after all).

This year provided little in the way of thrills (or spills) as most stars stuck with neutrals and monochrome. Not even Kelly Osbourne looked all that bad.

But as we like to see the glass half full, we would like to thank Gwyneth Paltrow for her choice of dress.

She gave us a sneak peak into Tom Ford’s super secret collection after the Texan designer banned all photography at his show earlier this month – leaving everyone but a select few in the dark.

We are told Gwyn’s white column frock is hot off the Winter 2012 catwalk and was Ford’s finale gown.

It’s so nifty, it even comes with a detachable cape.

We  think she looks beautiful, what do you think?
