The ultimate upcycle: Rusty bike to arthouse light

It’s always a little bit sad to see a once-fine bicycle rusting away, abandoned, locked to a fence somewhere to end its days rusting slowly while scavengers pick over the best parts, leaving the mangled, corroding remains (well, as a cyclist with a soft heart, I find it sad anyway…). But in New York, two artists have found a way to reinstate the majesty of the two-wheeler, by salvaging its parts and turning them into art.

Inspired by Japanese sculptor Isamo Noguchi’s Akari pendant light and those of George Nelson, Andrew Wagner and Jen Turner saw a resemblance between the rusting wheels of abandoned bikes, and the former’s arthouse lighting designs.

They set about creating their own tribute, using pieces they salvaged from unwanted bike wreckages from neighbourhoods they found were fertile hunting ground for these abandoned treasures – Williamsburg, East Village, SoHo.

The result? A resounding success, that as the artists put it, are a sweet reminder of cycling as children through the neighbourhoods where they found the bikes.

Here’s how they did it (via the New York Times):

“Materials collected, we set about devising a simple fixture with an air of 1960s cool. The design was straightforward: We took two de-spoked rims, one slightly larger than the other, and inserted the smaller into the larger, securing them at one junction with a screw, nut and washer.

Once the structure was in place, it was time to install the light. An old lamp socket and cord would work beautifully, though you can find something similar at any lighting store (we got ours at Canal Lighting for $20). With at least 20 feet of cord, the lamp can be adapted to virtually any setup.

We ran the cord through one junction of the structure, leaving the plug on the outside, then we attached the light socket to the end of the cord inside the lamp, using a plastic cable grip to hold the wire and bulb at the right level.

We then wove ribbon through the spoke holes (though you could also use sliced, discarded bike tubes), to provide structural support for the final phase of construction — the application of ripstop nylon, often used as parachute fabric.

The entire project — from collecting the material to building the lamp — could easily be done in a day. (Ours took a little over two weeks, but only because we kept tweaking the design.)

And once complete, it’s a surprisingly beautiful and mildly cheeky reminder of the leafy suburbs where many of us first learned to pedal.”

From Trash to Treasure: A Workshop Exploring Transformation, with Andrew Wagner and Jen Turner, will be held in conjunction with the “Found” show, at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, in Ridgefield, Conn., on March 31. Information: (203) 438-4519 or aldrichart.org/events.

Victoria Beckham takes New York Fashion Week by the (golden) balls!

Her collection went down a storm when she showed it in NYC on Sunday. And as she celebrated in the city yesterday evening with a meal out with pals, Victoria unleashed her mischievous side, posing in front of a David Beckham pants billboard and cupping his, erm, unmentionaballs.

More than a handful is a waste

What a gal. DB of course, couldn’t resist posting the pic on his Facebook page with the caption ‘So proud of my wife taking #NYFW by the balls’ where it is currently on its way to earning 35,000 ‘likes’. That is a lot of social networking love.

Truly brilliant husband and wifery, or another victory for Brand Beckham? We’re going with the former.

PS By the way, VB is wearing a print dress from the AW12 Victoria collection (the less expensive one) she has just shown, which she (no newsflash here really) paired with six-inch Louboutins.

PPS Here’s a handful of something else: images from Victoria’s AW2012 Victoria Beckham collection. S

WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT OF THE BECKHAMS (again)…

David covers the March issue of Men’s Health. Gawd, their star is in the ascendant still, after all this time. Here are the UK and U.S. covers (which do you prefer?) plus a few extra shots taken by photographer Doug Inglish.

Which is my best side?

Are you SURE you can't see my spot?

SJP wraps up in NYC

Posted on by D in Fashion News, Fashionfreude, Street Style | Leave a comment

It’s sub-zero and snowing in New York (we know this because Diane Von Furstenburg said so) – but Sarah Jessica Parker nonetheless braved the winter chill  - and damn, the wind that whistles through NYC is icy – to pick her kid up from school yesterday.

Things we love about this photo:

  1. The fact that SJP faced the Arctic conditions to pick her daughter up herself. Ff would have sent the nanny.
  2. SJP’s hat + honeyed highlighted hair look. Expensive yet insouciant at the same time. Skilful work.
  3. Her little girl’s (suspected Burberry) coat. Tres chic for a toddler.
  4. The fact she’s nicked Matthew Broderick’s jeans. He doesn’t deserve them, the rat.
  5. Her Chanel bag. Want one.

Minimalist? No ta, says Agyness Deyn

That's a lot of leopards

That's a whole lot of leopards…

You can hear Loyd Grossman now as he peeps through the keyhole: So who DOES live in a house like this?

ANSWER: British-born, Now York-based model Agyness Deyn.
Agy has put her enormous 2,911 sq ft Williamsburg loft on the market (for $2.5m – someone’s doing alright), meaning we can all have a jolly good nose around. The fantastical rococo/baroque/renaissance/whatever apartment is an explosion of architectural and interior design styles, with leopard-print rugs clashing with hot air balloon prints, a Dali-esque mural, ceramic flower chairs, conch seats and velvet chaise longues. In one bedroom, an extravagantly proportioned baroque sleigh bed is overlooked by a statue on a plinth. In another, an under-the-sea theme is created with wall mural and conch shell seats.

All Agy’s antiques are unique and fascinating, with not a boring beige anything in sight. But as with all things that make a statement, not everyone is convinced. Its ornate and florid excess has divided observers; the words ‘gaudy’ and ‘acid trip’ have been mentioned more than once.

For FF’s part, we adore it. Playful, intriguing, opulent, and just a tad eccentric. Loving your work, Ags.

Minimalism is a dirty word for our Agy
