Karl Lagerfeld goes sporty for Selfridges

Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld today unveiled his plans for an Olympic pop-up shop in one of Fashionfreude’s favourite places to be in London, Selfridges.

The collection, Team Karl, will feature Olympic style apparel and accessories that the store says will capture the ‘energy and celebrations around the Olympic Games in the host city of London.’… pics to follow…

Now that is one sweet bride… Enter the McQueen-inspired gummy bear wedding dress made from 50,000 sweets

Posted on by D in Artfreude, Fashion News, Fashionfreude | Leave a comment

Some inventive stylists with an insanely sweet tooth (or perhaps not, or they wouldn’t have been left with the 50,000 sweets they needed) at new mag TWELV have created an incredible McQueen-inspired wedding dress entirely of gummy bears.

They made it by sticking each individual rainbow gummy bear on to a piece of vinyl sheeting, and the end result was so damn heavy (220lbs to be exact) that it took three people to lift it at the shoot… We don’t pity the colt-legged model who they staggered over to drape it on (see, modelling really IS hard work!) — unless she got to nibble at it afterwards, of course.

It is the work of Issa Igarashi and Sayuri Marakumi. Guys, we are seriously impressed.

Now what did you do with the leftovers? Nom nom nom.

Gucci gucci goo: So long, Chanel, Blake Lively is Gucci Premiere’s new babe

Posted on by D in Beautyfreude, Fashion News, Fashionfreude | Leave a comment

It isn’t exactly a rock and a hard place, but we don’t envy Blake Lively for having to choose between erstwhile employees Chanel and Gucci, whose payroll she is now on.
Despite the bitter envy though, we have to say she looks awesome – loving the vintage waves and the incredible gold dress.
Never mind the perfume she’s advertising (Gucci Premiere), we want the dress.

The ad is to be followed up with a short flick shown at Cannes shot by Nicholas Wending Refn (you’re no one in the beauty industry these days if you don’t have an award-winning film with your fragrance launch, see Dior for evidence).
As fashionista.com points out, the pic, shot by Mert and Marcus, has Blake looking into a mirrored wall so we get both her profile and her full face… and Gucci get two for the price of one.
Well if you’re going to pay what it takes to lure a girl away from Chanel you damn well wanna get your money’s worth.

Royal Ascot 2012: Hats off to the Queen!

Posted on by D in Fashion News, Fashionfreude, Street Style | Leave a comment

Ascot came and went in a blur of hooves and hats… New friends were won, last month’s salary was lost. The hats were spectacular, with Philip Treacy, Steven Jones and the brilliant Jane Taylor dressing more heads than I could count… here’s the pick of the pics from the best fashion show race meet of the calendar.

Weirdest trio of the week: Teeny Mary-Kate Olsen, her boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy and his equally tiny daughter

Sir, would your daughters like the children's menu or will they eat with the grown ups?

Sir, would your daughters like the children's menu or will they eat with the grown ups?

They say a picture paints a thousand words. And in the case of this one – it’s so so true. We need say nothing, other than behold Mary-Kate Olsen, 25-year-old fashion designer, tiny twin, girlfriend to Olivier Sarkozy, age 42. And now behold his tiny daughter (age and name unknown, but she’s his child with Charlotte Bernard), nestled under his other arm.

God. We were about to fire off a nasty letter to Mr Sarkozy for letting his school-age daughter smoke in public. Oops! Wonder how many times she’s offered the children’s menu when they’re out together.

PS Fact fans: Oliver Sarkozy is, as his name suggest, related to former French President Nicolas – the two are half-brothers. Imagine what she would look like stood next to Carla! Lord pray for Carla to wear her dowdy old flats the day that happens.

PPS More facts: Us magazine unearthed these five gems about Olivier – who it transpires actually goes by the name of Oliver and doesn’t even have a French accent. Boring!

1. He’s the half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Olivier’s father, Pal Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa, had three children with Andree Mallah – including Nicolas — before they divorced and he married Olivier’s mother Christine de Ganay. The half-brothers would spend time together in the summer.

2. Olivier has two children with his ex-wife, Charlotte Bernard. Nicolas Sarkozy conducted their wedding ceremony in the 1997.

3. Olivier currently works as the Managing Director of the Carlyle Group’s Global Financial Services Group based in New York.

4. His last high-profile relationship was with actress Stella Schnabel – daughter of artist Julian Schnabel – whom he split with in March.

5. Olivier goes by Oliver and doesn’t have a French accent.

Ryan Gosling, age 9, in Mormon talent contest = priceless

Ryan: I like the way you moooove

Ryan: I like the way you moooove

Ahhh, Ryan Gosling wasn’t always the cool, brooding type we know and love today.
When he was a mere sapling of a boy, age 9, he entered a Mormon talent contest (his mother and father were Mormon, though he considers himself ‘non-denominational’) with a song and dance act that has to be seen to be believed.

Cringe as he sings his cheesy opening song… then cheer as he snaps into a nutty dance routine that would make MC Hammer blush.

Watch and wonder (and marvel at how his jacket is remarkably similar to the one he wears in Drive, yet his veneer of brooding cool so many, many years away).

Acne shoes… living proof that some things just look better on

Posted on by D in Fashion News, Fashionfreude | Leave a comment

We mocked these Acne shoes when we first saw them. ‘Hideous!’, we scoffed. Then we accidentally fell into the Acne store on Dover St to escape last week’s deluge – which is when we tried on, and accidentally bought, the Barika dress (£320). As is their wont, the clever shop assistant offered a pair of heels shoes to try with it – which turned out to be The Shoes Formerly Known As Hideous. Which we had to humbly admit turned out to be not so hideous after all. Their heavy straps and metalwork make the ankle look more delicate (the well-documented Ugg Effect™) and somehow that previously derided spindly heel combined with men’s shoe heel was not at all grotesque, as we had unfairly deemed them.  Acne: We apologise.

They don’t photograph as well as they could have done, but here’s a vague idea (excuse the feet – the more deserving recipient of the moniker hideous):
